Sue G. Atkinson, Chairman

Sue G. Atkinson, chairman, founded Atkinson Public Relations in 1986. Since then she has provided counsel to the firm’s broad base of local and national clients on communication needs ranging from reputation management and internal communications to crisis communications and mergers and acquisitions.  Well-known initiatives led by Atkinson include the launch of Nissan’s first U.S. manufacturing facility, the creation of the Nashville Chamber’s highly successful economic development program Partnership 2000 (now Partnership 2020), the 1997 reorganization of HCA, and campaigns to bring professional hockey and football to Nashville.

She currently serves on the board of directors of Pinnacle Financial Partners and its subsidiary Pinnacle National Bank, the Gaylord Entertainment Music City Bowl,  Nashville Opera Association, the YWCA of Nashville, and the Centennial Medical Center Board of Trustees.  In December 2007 Governor Phil Bredesen appointed her to a 6-year term on the Tennessee Higher Education Commission as the representative of the 5th Congressional District.  She is a member of the Public Relations Society of America, the Rotary Club of Nashville, and a Friend of the Society of International Business Fellows.

She is a past chairman of the board of the United Way of Middle Tennessee and served as vice chairman of communications and a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce in 1994-95, and in the same capacity in 1999-2000.  Past board positions include the Metropolitan Nashville Convention Commission, the Nashville Symphony Association, Children’s Hospital of Vanderbilt University, and the Leadership Nashville Alumni Association.  She has also served on the board of trustees of the Ensworth School and the board of directors of the Alumni Association of Vanderbilt University.  She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Vanderbilt.

In 1995, the National Association for Professional Women named her “Community Salesperson of the Year.”  In 1999, she was named to the list of “Top 10 Advertising and PR Executives” by Business Nashville magazine.  In February 2000, she was featured in Business Nashville magazine as one of six distinguished businesswomen.  In 2005 the Nashville chapter of the Public Relations Society of America presented her with the Hercules Award for outstanding contributions to the industry.
